RCIA stands for The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults...
The RCIA is the name of the formal program of instruction and liturgical rites that a person goes through to become a member of the Catholic Church Community. The RCIA has its roots in the beginning experience of the church as adults came forward and wished to formally join the church community.
A series of steps developed in the early church sought to initiate the person into the church. Over the years this process became more and more the work of the clergy working privately with a person, but by a decree of the Second Vatican Council, the RCIA was re-established as the way of initiating adults into the Catholic Church Community. The RCIA is a community project. We all benefit from it.
In 1972 the Rite was approved by Pope Paul VI. In 1986 the United States bishops formally approved what is known as the RCIA for the entire American Church. The program consists of the various stages of instruction and liturgical celebrations that an un-baptized or a member of another faith would have to follow to be fully initiated in the full life of the Catholic Church.
The RCIA program is designed to welcome the person who inquires about the Catholic Faith on a parish level. We encourage community members always to be aware that the spirit of God still leads others to faith in Jesus Christ. Our parishioners are the best ambassadors who have to give a good example to others and encourage others to learn more about the faith.
Those who have gone through the RCIA program and those parishioners who have volunteered can attest to the great power of God's spirit at work in the hearts of all people.
There is an open invitation to un-baptized, a member of another faith group, or any Catholics who, for one reason or another, have never made the first Eucharist or received Confirmation to come and find out more about us.
Call the parish office (908-850-0652), stop by and see a staff member, or send an email...you will find a warm welcome!
